AAAW Outdoor Event & Camping

Published by michaelh under AAAW Events

Hey AAAW, we are working on a great overnight camping trip not far from Seattle, June 29-30.

AAAW is covering the cost of a limited number of standard campsites, so RSVP here today to save your spot . Those who RSVP first cover the costs of their transportation, food, and incidentals. AAAW will provide the s’mores makings and sticks! Fun around the fire, fresh air, and enjoying the great outdoors with fellow AAAW friends and family is the general plan for the weekend.

So we can keep track, after you RSVP here, please email aaawash@gmail.com to let us know how many are in your tent/group. We will announce here when we max out the AAAW-reserved campsites, and then you will have to handle your own site reservation. If you aren’t one of the lucky ones, or plan to bring a RV/Trailer, please reserve and pay for your spot at the link below.
http://www.mytpu.org/tacomapower/parks-rec/alder-lake-park/Default.htm

Alder Lake Park is a great park with camping areas that accommodate RV and tent campers alike. The park is managed as part of the Nisqually River Project by Tacoma Public Utilities.
RV sites range from small to spacious and RV sites are equipped with water and electric service.  Some sites also have sewer service as well.
The swimming area is large and deep and there is a boat launch for small craft like canoes and kayaks near the ample day use picnicking areas.
Alder Lake is a reservoir created by Alder dam and has some of the cleanest most beautiful mountain glacier water you can imagine.
Nearby attractions include steam train ride near Mineral Lake.  For those off road enthusiast Elbe has an ORV Park nearby.  Elbe also has a Church near the railroad depot on the register of national historic places.  And of course right down the road is Mount Rainier National Park and all of the activities there.

AAAW Spring fund drive

Published by michaelh under AAAW Events

Dear members of AAAW,

As board members of Asian Adult Adoptees of Washington (AAAW), we would like to personally thank you for being committed to AAAW through your continuous participation in our events.  Our community would not exist without engaged and active members like you.

Several years ago, AAAW eliminated our dues-collecting membership program, because of the cost of maintaining such a membership system.  As a result, AAAW made a decision to move away from member dues as a primary means of support, which means your financial contribution to our organization is vital to the continued success of our many valuable programs and activities. We have not collected dues from AAAW members for a number of years.  Now, we would like to ask our most dedicated members to ensure the future of AAAW through a contribution at a level that is meaningful to you.

AAAW has no paid staff – our board members are all volunteers – your donation will go directly to AAAW’s extensive programming.  Here is just a small sample of what we have done recently and what lies ahead:

·            In-depth dialogue series (ongoing)
·            Monthly community dinners
·            Film screenings and festivals
·            Annual Holiday Party
·            Annual Spring Potluck –May 11th
·            Hiking/great outdoors event-June 29th
·            Annual Summer BBQ at Carkeek Park – July 14th
·            AAAW Gala October 5th

In addition to the above programming, AAAW will launch our Teen & Youth Mentorship program this year!  We are very excited to bring regular opportunities for adult adoptees to meet with young Asian adoptees in a fun, interactive, and supportive environment.  AAAW will kick off the program with large group monthly events this summer then forming small mentorship clusters for an on going annual program starting October of this year!  This will NOT be possible with out your full support.  Our 100% AAAW volunteer Youth and Teen Committee as well as our adoptee mentors and mentees are excited, inspired and ready to go!

AAAW also offers a semiannual scholarship of up to $600 granted by the board of AAAW to support fellow adoptees pursuing educational opportunities that enrich their understanding of adoptees’ early cultural background.  Please help us support this important and meaningful scholarship fund.

Please consider making a donation to AAAW this month both in order to support our upcoming programming and to also ensure a sustainable future for our organization.  ANY amount that you can give will help.  Donations can be made at our website at http://www.aaawashington.org/wpress/?page_id=989.  Just click on the “Donate” icon!

With gratitude for your support,

The board members of AAAW-Asian Adult Adoptees of Washington

AAAW Adoptee Mentors

Published by michaelh under AAAW Events,Teens & Youth

Hello future ADOPTEE MENTORS!

AAAW is starting a youth mentorship program and are recruiting fun, thoughtful, adult adoptees that want to make a difference in young adoptees lives thru relationship building and mentoring. This program is fresh and by being part of it now, you have the opportunity bring your ideas and passion to shaping AAAW’s youth program.

THURSDAY MARCH 28th 8:00 – 9:00pm.  PLEASE RSVP if you plan to come!

MENTOR INFORMATIONAL MEETING at OASIS TEA ZONE.

We welcome your questions, input and creative ideas!

http://www.yelp.com/biz/oasis-tea-zone-seattleTEA

5119 6th Ave
South Seattle, WA 98104

(*This meeting is immediately following the AAAW monthly Dinner 6:30 – 7:45 pm at Phnom Penh Noodle House at 660 South King St., Seattle)

The PROGRAM: The official program will begin Fall 2013 (October), but we are recruiting mentors to begin with the SPRING/SUMMER KICKOFF program and to continue into the 2013-2014 program.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: The program consists of monthly events with adult and youth adoptees. Small groups of mentors and mentees will be formed (so you will not have a one-on-one pair.)  Events will generally be on 3rd Saturday of every month. Events are still to be determined but FUN things like:  trampoline parties, picnics, outdoor movies, and other activities which we all enjoyed as kids. The most significant piece is that you will be building relationships with young adoptees and truly impacting our community.

THE COMMITMENT: We are asking that mentors commit to attending as many events as possible, at least three quarters of all events, and to think about the time commitment. This is really for the youth and being consistent.

INTERESTED? DATES TO REMEMBER

MENTOR INTERVIEWS will be scheduled TBD prior to April 20 APRIL 20th: MENTOR
TRAINING (Location and time TBD)

All new mentors will be required to attend

EVENT DATES FOR SPRING/SUMMER: May 18, June 15, July 20, and August 17.

If you are interested, but unable to make the March informational meeting, please contact one of the committee members:
