MiniGathering
KADapalooza IX-Minneapolis Oct. 15th-17th
We’re affectionately
referring to this as a “micro mini”…not because we necessarily think
we’ll be few in numbers, but we want to keep things VERY SIMPLE! We’ve
found what keeps bringing us together isn’t specific agendas, but rather
the camaraderie we feel among a group of people who are truly our
peers…and in my ways, to our surprise, friendships found in the last
place any of us would have ever thought to look.

Asian and Pacific Islander
Adoptees:
A Journey through Identity
A Special Exhibition at the Wing Luke Asian Museum
January 7, 2005 to September 4, 2005
While many adoption trends are tied to
specific historic events, such as war and poverty, Americans adopting
children from Asia has grown in demand. As thousands of children and babies
enter into the United States each year from Asia, many prospective parents
face challenges in raising a child of another ethnicity from their own, as
well as the general questions of identity adoptees acquire through
adolescence. The adoption experience is complex and very personal. This
exhibition captures the brave journey adoptees make in pursuit of
self-identity. This intimate exhibition is a unique melding of history,
personal testimony, culture, and art from adoptees, adoptive parents, family
members, and those involved in the adoption process.
Nationwide Call for Artifacts for
Adoptee Exhibit
The Wing Luke
Asian Museum is currently seeking artifact submissions nationwide for its
upcoming exhibit focusing on the Asian Adoptee experience, which will be
opening on January 5, 2005. The exhibit will be both historical and
contemporary in scope, highlighted by an oral history project and art
submissions.
Artifacts may
be objects of historical, social or emotional significance such as
photographs and adoption documents, identification tags, etc. Everyday
objects such as clothing or toys will also help illustrate the adoptee
experience. In addition, historical objects such as pieces of the crashed
Operation Babylift C-5A Galaxy plane will play an invaluable role in the
exhibit.
All items
loaned to the museum will be insured and will be professionally cared for in
the prescribed manner of the museum's strict policy. Please e-mail George
Quibuyen, WLAM Exhibits Coordinator, at
gquibuyen@wingluke.org or call
(206) 623-5124 ext. 115 to arrange a submission or for further inquiries.
Additional
information regarding the exhibit can be found online at
www.wingluke.org.

"Korea Immersion Program"
for Adult Adoptees
The "Korea Immersion Program" operated by Inje University, in Kimhae,
Korea, offers a unique opportunity for adult Korean adoptees to return to
the land of their birth in order to learn about its language, culture,
history and people. The
program's purpose is to help adult Korean adoptees increase their
awareness and understanding of their motherland, and to help them make
enduring connections with Korea even after they return to their own homes.
Entirely subsidized by Inje University, the Korea Immersion Program
provides a four-month stay in Korea, free room and board in university
residence halls, daily classes in Korean language and culture, access to
computer and fitness facilities on campus, several trips to scenic and
cultural sites around the country, opportunities for home stays, and
chances to form friendships with Korean roommates and fellow adopted
program participants.
Specially-selected English-speaking faculty teach courses on subjects such
as Korean language, Korean culture, history of Korea, traditional art
forms, Tae Kwon Do and others.
Korean roommates and home stay families are screened for English
proficiency and interest in forming Western connections.
The only costs for those selected for the Korea Immersion Program are a
$600 registration fee and air fare.
In addition, participants are asked to teach daily 1- to 2-hour English
conversation classes to Korean students.
More information about the Korea Immersion Program, operated by the Inje
Institute for International Human Resources (IIIHR) at Inje University,
can be found on the program's web site at:
http://home.inje.ac.kr/~iiihr/ .
Those interested in the program can also contact Program Director
Professor C.Y. Kim by e-mail at:
cykim2002@yahoo.co.kr
.
The four-month Korea Immersion Programs begin twice yearly, once in March
and once in September. Since
its first session in March 2001, more than 30 adult adoptees from the US and Europe
have participated. Response
was positive and enthusiastic.

pleased to invite Korean adoptees residing abroad to the Summer
Cultural Program. The program focuses on Korean culture, history, customs,
and language; but these are not the only things the program offers. A great
number of opportunities during the program will help adoptees learn about
their motherland, enhance awareness of adoption issues, and build bridges
among Korean adoptees across the continents. We promise a terrific summer
program with sightseeing and fun times, as well as priceless memories to
take back home with you.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
